The guinea pig also called the cavy, is a species of rodent belonging to the family Caviidae and the genus Cavia. Despite their common name, these animals are not in the pig family, nor are they from Guinea. An adult guinea pig is 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) long and weighs about two to three pounds (.9 to 1.4 kg).

Guinea pig may be solid black, brown, red, or tan, or a mixture of these colors with white spotting. The hair ranges from short to long, and is coarse or smooth. Guinea pigs are traditionally thought of as good first pets for children, but it should always be an adult that takes responsibility to ensure they are properly handled and cared for.Typically guinea pigs live for 5-6 years, but some may live longer.
